Music in the AIR…

Akashvani, as All India Radio (AIR) is known to us, has special memories for me. As a child, I remember listening to doyens of music transport me to an amazing alternate world through this medium. Keeping thalam, listening to the amazing alapanas, recording rare krithis and learning them, browsing through the AIR magazine VANOLI that carried so many excellent notations and articles, listening to the one-on-one lessons taught by great musicians like Semmengudi mama, DKP amma and more was part of my regular music curriculum at my guru’s home.

From winning the AIR competition at the age of 16 to becoming an A TOP artiste at the AIR, the journey has been a very pleasant one with AIR.

Over the years, there have been numerous visits to this wonderful organization that brings music from all around the country to our homes – just through the air! Yesterday was one such day when I recorded along with Sri.K.V.Prasad on the Mridangam and Sri.Ramachandran on the Ghatam. Special thanks to Sri. M.A.Krishnaswamy for recording this for us.

Here are a few pictures from my recording at the AIR Chennai yesterday. If you are in Chennai, do tune in to AIR Chennai station TODAY at 9:30 pm to listen to this concert.
